Travel to the ancient city of Meknes via lush Moroccan Switzerland.

Midelt, where we stayed the night before, was a town on the plateau at the midpoint between the desert city of Merzouga and the ancient cities of Fez and Meknes. It still takes about three hours from this town to Meknes, the destination of this day. So, we will continue driving in the highland area for a while yet.
前日のメルズーガからのルートと同様、道はとてもしっかりとして走りやすかったです。しして、今まで以上に、とても緑が豊かで鮮やかだったのが印象的でした。
もしもう少し時間があるのならば、立ち寄りたかったのですが、このミデルト−メクネス間は、別名[highlight]「モロッコのスイス」[/highlight]と呼ばれているエリア。高原のせいなのか季候がヨーロッパ本土に近いのだそうです。19世紀にフランスが治めていた頃、フランス人がこのあたりを避暑地として選んでいたそうです。
This kind of drive in the forest was the first time for me on this trip.
In addition, the route we took from Middelt this time, but I heard that it is sometimes closed in winter. It is because of snow.
It seems strange that it snows not so far away from the Sahara Desert.

そんな高原エリアを2時間弱ドライブし、標高もだいぶ低いところに到着、目的地のメクネスが近づくと、今度は辺り一面ぶどう畑が広がり始めました。モロッコもワインを生産しています。その中心がこれから向かうメクネス郊外だそうです。モロッコはもちろんイスラム教の国ですから、基本的にお酒はNGです。ただワインやビールを生産しています。特にメクネスはワインが有名であり、そのせいもあり「誘惑の街」と呼ばれることもあるそうです。
It seems that this Meknes wine is the best souvenir.
After about half an hour of looking at the vineyards, we gradually approached a large city. Finally, it is the ancient city of Meknes.
Ancient City of Meknes
ミデルトを出発して3時間弱で最初の目的地[highlight]「メクネス」[/highlight]に到着。1675年から1728年までアラウィー朝の首都だったところだそうです。世界遺産にも認定されています。
Basically, the highlight of the city is a corner of the old town, but the city itself is so big that it was hard to reach the old town area and we wandered around for about 20 minutes.
I approached the old town area somehow, because there was a large parking lot near the roundabout that was just near the entrance, I parked my car here and started sightseeing. As usual, there was an uncle of the watchman here, too. If you get used to such a watchman who looked suspicious at first, you can feel safe.
そのロータリー側の駐車場から歩いて数分で、メクネスのシンボルの一つ[highlight]マンスール門[/highlight]が見えてきます。
そして、この門の向かい正面が[highlight]エディム広場[/highlight]です。
As you would expect from an ancient city that has been recognized as a World Heritage Site, it was crowded with many tourists. And the traffic of the car is also a lot. Especially, there is no traffic light, so it is hard to cross the road.
On the street in front of the square where many cars come and go, we could see many blue petit taxis carrying local people and tourists. Speaking of petit taxi, is it one of the specialties of Morocco? I felt that I came to the city. In Casablanca and Marrakech, it was red color.
Now, we took the side of Mansour Gate to the space opposite the gate. To be honest, I wasn’t sure where I could or couldn’t sightsee, but I went ahead anyway.
We passed through several more gates to a fine street.
そして、[highlight]ムーレイ・イスマイル廟[/highlight]の前へとやって来ました。
This mausoleum, the resting place of King Moulay Ismail, is one of the most important attractions of Meknes along with the Mansour Gate. Non-Muslims are welcome to enter and admission is free.
Very beautiful Islamic decoration. This is something that I used to see in Marrakech and other places.
続いて、[highlight]キリスト教徒の地下牢[/highlight]。ここではキリスト教は異教徒、その異教徒を弾圧するための地下牢だったそうです。最大で4万人近くが鎖につながれ囚われていたようです。いまではひんやりとした巨大地下倉庫といったところ。
After visiting the main places, we went back to Edim Square and had lunch. We ordered the same tajine as usual at the restaurant on the city wall overlooking Edim Square. It’s one of the few repertoire that I really don’t know if there are any others (laughs).
The amount of food is modest, but the price is reasonable, as expected of a city and a sightseeing spot.
これにてメクネス観光は終了。もうメディナはいいかなあと思い行くのをやめました。意外と時間が経っていたので早くフェズへ行く必要があったのも観光をここで切り上げた理由です。なお、これを書いている今知りましたが、メディナ内にはブー・イナニア・マドラサというイスラム神学学校跡があったようでしてこれがとてもきれいでよいとのこと。確かにマドラサはマラケシュでも見学しましたが非常に美しかったのでちょっと残念でした。
さて旅もいよいよ終盤、そろそろ違う食事、そしてお酒も飲みたくなってきた頃。しかし、この次に行くのはフェズ。このフェズには2泊の予定。モロッコを代表する大観光都市、ワインの産地メクネスも近いので、きっとワインも飲めるのではないか、買えるのではないか。そんな期待を抱きながらAncient City of Meknesを後にしました。メクネスからは高速で1時間程度です。（続く）
