Date of visit: August 12, 2010, around 3:00 p.m.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to stop raining, but we’re heading to our next destination. This time, we head for « Quedlinburg ». It’s almost just west of Wittenberg, but it took some time because the Autobahn doesn’t run there.

Just on the way, I got hungry and had lunch. We stopped at a Mac which was in a shopping center in a certain country town. Which area is this? By the way, this area was former East German territory.

It was just before 3 p.m. when we arrived in Kvetrinburg. It took more time than I expected, although it was affected by the lunch break. It was a little difficult to find a parking lot, but we secured a good place on the old town side.

Now, this place, Kvetlinburg, is not so well known in Japan. It is introduced only a little in « Globe-Trotter ». It may be because of the inconvenience of transportation.

What kind of city is it, yes, Dr. Wikipedia, please.

Quedlinburg.

Quedlinburg.(独:Quedlinburg)は、ドイツ、ザクセン=アンハルト州の都市。ハルツ山地の北東に位置し、ボーデ川が流れる。1994年にユネスコ世界遺産に登録された。

The history of Kvedlinburg dates back to the early 9th century. After Heinrich’s death in 936, his wife Mathilde of Ringelheim founded the Kvedlinburg convent as a place of education for the daughters of noble families, commemorating Heinrich and other kings. Heinrich’s son Otto I, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, further expanded the castle that his father had laid the foundations for and made it an imperial palace.

It stopped raining a little when we arrived, but it started raining hard again after a while. It’s a pity because this town is also very beautiful. It’s a really wonderful town with a lot of history.

We came to a place that looked like a central square. By this time, it was raining very hard. It was cold…

But it’s still a stunning view. It’s exactly what you’d expect from medieval Germany.

It was raining, so there were not so many people, but there were some tourists. I don’t know if it was local Germans or not, but we were the only oriental people including Japanese who were mostly Europeans.

In any case, I think I will go back to this city and this area as well as Wittenberg.

さて次の街へ移動。本日宿泊するゴスラーへ向かいます。(続く)
