Duolingo’s artificially intelligent French chat is quite interesting

Artificial intelligence is all the rage these days, and here it is again!

Have you ever heard of a web service called Duolingo?

I used to use it a lot, but not so much these days. But recently, it seems that the artificial intelligence chat feature, which was already released in English, is now available in French, so I decided to give it a try.

By the way, it seems that only iOS is still supported by smartphones.

It’s been a very long time since I launched the app. How to use this chat function, just tap here in the bottom part of the screen.

It’s like there’s a certain theme and you type in a sentence according to it. Well, even though it’s called a chat, at this stage it’s more like a simple conversation test. The chat goes more smoothly and at a faster tempo than I expected, so although it feels a bit fast, the sentences are simple enough that even a beginner like me can keep up.

However, instead of just chatting in the dark, Duolingo does not allow you to enter inappropriate words or phrases, but rather automatically selects words that can be entered according to the questions asked by the Duolingo computer.

At first, of course, you have to answer with no hints, but if you have trouble replying or are not sure, you can ask for help (press the appropriate box below).

If you can answer the question properly, you will get points. You get 2 points for the best answer and 1 point for a so-so answer. However, if you use the help function, you won’t get any points. Well, these points aren’t really useful in the first place lol (would the person inside get mad if I said that?)

Anyway, it’s a great way to train your daily conversation skills because it keeps the conversation smooth. Now, I’m putting in 15 to 20 minutes of free conversation time at the end of Cafetalk lessons, and it might help me to find something to talk about at that time. I’d like to do that.
