Travel trouble #2: A stone hit the windshield and cracked it while driving on the highway -2012 France and Spain

2012 Spain and France

It wasn’t a big deal, but it was definitely the biggest problem this time.

It happened on the highway on the way from Santiago de Compostela to Oviedo.

We were driving along at high speed when suddenly a stone flew from ahead and hit the windshield with a loud bang!

I was very surprised, but it didn’t affect my driving at all because it was just a momentary incident, but there was a black line about 5 cm in front of the driver’s side of the windshield.

Well, it’s instantly « cracked ».

Fortunately, it seemed to be inside the glass and not a big one, so I was able to drive afterwards without any problems.

Oops, I forgot to leave a picture, didn’t I? (The picture at the beginning has nothing to do with…)

Now, what I was more worried about than the safety was the « claim », I wonder what will happen because it is not a level that can be hidden…

Sure enough, they found it when I returned it in Madrid. Anyway, I was told to ask the situation at the office when I checked in (return), so I went there reluctantly.

結果は、追加で104.38ユーロ払うこととなりました。

I was surprised to be told verbally (in English) by the person in the office that « insurance is available, but you may have to pay up to 738 euros », but I was relieved to find out that it was only this much.

It’s not my fault, it’s a really unfortunate accident, but it looks like there’s nothing I can do about it.

I insisted that it was not my intention by any stretch of the imagination in my poor English, but he answered apologetically that it was no use. Well, it can’t be helped, can it?

By the way, I did not take out full coverage insurance this time. I only paid for the normal type of insurance that is always included when you apply. Even so, it was a good experience to know that the cost is about 100 euros at most for this kind of damage.

また、請求書の味方についてもいろいろ勉強になりました。一番下の項目「Datos salida Existng Damage」「Datos entrada Damage in」の意味。

It may be expressed somewhat differently in different countries.

  • 「Datos salida Existng Damage」とは借りるときに既に存在していた傷
  • 「Datos entrada Damage in」とは帰した時に新しく付いた傷

It seems to refer to I thought that it is important to understand the meaning of this when I borrow. I’ve borrowed many times, but this is the first time I learned this.

確かに海外のレンタカーは日本ほど傷にシビアではないのですが、傷の状況は知っておいたほうがいいと思いました。きちんとデータ化もされているようなのである意味日本よりもしっかりしているかもしれませんね。
