Thomas Demand Exhibition – I went to Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo

10. Hobby Generalart

The other day I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Kiba.

I hadn’t been to this place since I visited once when I was in Tokyo for graduate school.

It’s a big building with a slightly bubble-like aroma, but it’s one of my favorite museums in Tokyo because it displays a good amount of elaborate works in a large area.

Especially the special exhibition, this one was very wonderful.

I didn’t have any prior knowledge about this, but the works on the flyers and posters were very nice.

« Thomas Demand (b. 1964) is one of the leading figures in German contemporary art, known for his compositional photography in which he creates and photographs the situation of his subjects. »

I decided to stop by because the style of the work seemed to be interesting.

It is 1,000 yen together with the permanent exhibition, so it might be cheap.

First of all, I went along the route without any knowledge. Of course, the actual work was much more attractive than the wonderful works on the flyers and posters.

I was about to leave when I saw this pamphlet with explanations of the works…

Demand mainly photographs scenes of political and social events, which he elaborately recreates on thick paper based on photographs.

This pamphlet did not explain what « meaning » or « sociality » each work had, nor did it specifically explain the meaning or sociality of each work, but it did explain in detail what scenes this work was shot of, which is enough to imagine.

On my first viewing, when I had absolutely no knowledge of

»It’s a lot of work to make each model and then photograph it. »

  »It’s so beautiful.

In a good sense, I was able to genuinely enjoy the works, but it was very interesting to see the exhibition from a new perspective.

I don’t like to be told this and that about works of art, as I do with music, but I prefer to appreciate and enjoy them as they are based on my own intuition.

However, I thought again that it is interesting to know the thoughts and motives behind the works.

彼の作品にはどのような「意味」や「社会性」があるのか、知りたい方はぜひとも美術館に足を運んでみてください。
