Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, the 5th stop on this trip and the 120th stop in total, is a beautiful village with a very long history.
This is the first beautiful village we visited on May 8, after St. Rizie, which we visited the day before but came back only to take photos.
First, we parked our car at the entrance of the village and took pictures of the town nestled in the hills.
When I looked at it, I saw something that looked like ruins.
I looked it up again, and it seems to be the remains of the Roman era.
And so it should be. Saint-Bertrand-de-Comange was founded by the Roman general Pompeius, who established a colony here after his expedition to Spain. Then, in the 11th century, the cathedral and Romanesque cloister, the symbol of this village, were built.
After that, pilgrims visited the village one after another because it was on the pilgrimage route to Santiago, and now it is not only a village on the pilgrimage route but also one of the most beautiful villages in France.

The car park is just behind the village. You can reach it by driving next to the city walls like this one.
It is a large parking lot, so you can park easily.
From there, a short walk will bring you to the center of the village and in front of the cathedral.
The square in front of the cathedral, however, had only a halfway decent souvenir shop and a cafe restaurant.
In some places, the streets have a « pilgrimage route » feel to them.
And the scenery in the back alleys is indeed a beautiful village.
(Although it has little to do with the beautiful village, I tend to take only pictures of cars…)
After looking at the plaque, we went inside the cathedral, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cathedral has an imposing atmosphere with nearly 1000 years of history.
And the Romanesque cloister.
Quiet time passes.
