Local Time: Afternoon, April 24, 2015
シャトルバスに揺られて約50分、エルサレム旧市街「ヤッフォ門」前に到着。途中、新市街側の喧騒した狭いエリアを通過している時に、[highlight]上下黒のスーツに白いシャツ、そして黒いシルクハット姿の人たち[/highlight]がたくさん歩いていました。いわゆる超正統派のユダヤ人。ユダヤ人の国に来たなあと強く感じました。
The hotel is just a few steps from the Jaffo Gate. Right in front of the Tower of David. It was past noon when I arrived, and it seemed that the hotel was not cleaned yet, so I left my big luggage at the reception and went to the city.
Anyway, we headed to the most famous monument nearby, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The area on the way to the church is called « Arab Street ». The goods fished up to the ceiling high in the narrow alley, densely lined up from the floor to the ceiling, it looks like a Don Quijote shop.
The old town is like a maze. And very narrow. We arrived at the first destination, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, though we were a little lost. It was crowded with a lot of people.

[highlight]「聖墳墓教会」[/highlight]は、イエス・キリストが死刑を宣告され、十字架を背負って歩かされ、最後に到着し処刑されたゴルゴダの丘の上とされています。そして時は過ぎ、ローマ帝国時代4世紀頃、キリスト教を国境として認定したコンスタンティヌス帝の母親であるヘレナが、このゴルゴダの丘に教会を立てたということです。そして、この場所にイエス・キリストの墓があります。
この後、[highlight]「ヴィア・ドロローサ」[/highlight]というイエス・キリストが十字架を背負って歩いた道をたどる予定ですので、詳細はそこで触れたいと思います。幾つかの聖なるポイント＝停留所があり、その一つ、イエスの亡骸を置いたとされる台がこちらであり、たくさんの信者がその台の前で膝まづいていました。特にこの日は金曜日、イエス・キリストが処刑された曜日、ということで、特に多くの人々で賑わっていました。
In addition, there were many queues at the tomb of Jesus Christ, so we decided to avoid it for the time being.

Via Dolorosa. This is the road along which Jesus Christ was sentenced to death about 2,000 years ago, and immediately afterwards was made to carry the cross on his back and walked to the hill of Golgotha.
Now it’s a narrow street with a lot of tourists and Don Quixote-like souvenir shops. And it was also Friday, so many people were walking along the path that Christ followed, singing a prayer song.
このヴィア・ドロローサにはいくつかの[highlight]「停留」[/highlight]と呼ばれるポイントがあります。例えば、第三停留は、「イエスが十字架の重さに耐えかねて最初に躓いた場所」なのだそうです。ローマ数字でこうした番号と停留によっては彫刻等があったりします。エルサレム滞在最終日に改めてこのヴィア・ドロローサを写真に収めたので、全停留に関しては、後日の日記でご紹介したいと思います。
Jerusalem’s first lunch was a kebab
It was 14:00 and I hadn’t eaten anything since this morning. So we had a late lunch by the 3rd and 4th stop. From the feeling I got from walking around the old town so far, there were almost no western style cafes or restaurants. There are only places like snacks and fast food. Middle East is such a feeling?
とはいえ、ここでいただいたケバブはとても美味しかったです。値段はコーラと合わせて60シュケル、日本円にすると1,800円といったところ。まだイスラエルの物価感覚がよくわかりませんが、どうもシュケル（※イスラエルの通貨）だと気持ち割高な気がします。数日滞在した経験では、ドルを合わせて持っておくと良かったなあと思いました。
Finally checked in, very early bedtime.
We then walked to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and finished our sightseeing for the day. It is 16:30 at this point. We return to the hotel. The room has been cleaned and we finally go to our room.
勤務明け直接の成田、しかも前日睡眠時間4時間。トルコ航空の深夜便内ではぐっすり眠れたものの、このあたりで体力的に限界。夕食も食べないまま、シャワーも浴びず18時には眠ってしまいました。シャワーは成田で入っておいてよかったです。（続く）
