Drive in All Weather mode in the snow

It was snowing in the Kanto area all day today. I think it is the first time this season to have a lot of snow. In such weather, I went to the practice of II spirit tonight, which is going to be presented the day after tomorrow.

Today I had to drive to the venue for the horn concert and it was cold, so I decided to drive in « All Weather Mode », which I’ve never used before because of the snow. But it was not snowing at all, so it was like raining.

In my AlfaRomeo Mito, there is a switch like this on the right side of the shift lever.

When you first get into the car and start the engine, it is always set to « Normal for city driving », but if you push it upward, it will switch to « Dynamic for sports driving », and conversely, if you push it downward, it will switch to « All Weather ».

To be honest, it’s hard to tell the difference unless you’ve driven it, but Dynamic is the most extreme and easiest to understand. When you set it to this mode, the steering becomes harder and when you step on the gas pedal even a little bit, it turns into the mode that the rpm rises at once. The rpm that gives the maximum torque is also lower than the other modes.

I don’t know about the AT cars that came out recently, but in my MT car, I can see that the response of the accelerator changes a lot. If you are not accustomed to it, as soon as you change from Normal to Dynamic, you may press the accelerator too much, and in some cases, you may end up spinning the wheel at low speed.

Once you get used to it, you’ll be so comfortable with this super sensitive Dynamic that you won’t be able to go back to anything else.

But as expected, this is the weather today. There was no snow on the ground, but I was a little worried in D mode. So I tried to run in « All Weather » mode which I have never used before. When I set the switch to « All Weather », the blue light next to the « a » on the bottom comes on. I didn’t know it was a blue lamp until recently. (By the way, N is white and D is orange.)

Well, I usually drive in D mode, so the first thing I felt was that the accelerator was very heavy. If you don’t step on the accelerator more than usual when you start the car, it will stall. As far as the steering goes, it feels even stiffer than D mode; compared to N, D is noticeably stiffer. This is easy to understand since it is in sport mode. It’s easy to understand because it’s in sport mode, but I thought it’s natural in a way because it increases stability.

After experiencing such a response, I felt that the stability of the car would increase even though the road surface was not so slippery.

If the VDC system works on slippery surfaces, I feel even more secure. Coincidentally, I had already experienced the VDC system in a Nissan test drive the other day, so I could feel its stability even more.

It was my first time to experience « All Weather » mode and I enjoyed it. But to be honest, I don’t want to use it too often. After all, D mode is more fun!

前はマニュアル車しかなかったのですが、数ヶ月くらい前からAT車も販売になったので興味が有る方はぜひどうぞ。実際生の車を見ると思った以上に大きいなあって思うかと思います。コンパクトクラスの車ですが思ったよりかは大きいかと思います。
